‘Hu is short for human – human being, human race, humankind. But Hu, itself is also a reference to color. As human beings, we all have a color. We all look different, we all speak different languages, but we’re all connected.’ Pharrell Williams
Pharrell Williams has a released a thoughtful addition to the sportswear market, joining once again with adidas to create a new line of activewear, Hu. With the release, Pharrell has used his prestigious position to create a platform for those who want to tell a different story from the ones we have already heard. In this video, Pharrell and adidas look to the people of MHA Nation, in North Dakota who have opened up to share their experiences and culture with the world, showing off their vibrant celebrations and family traditions. Pharrell hopes others can be inspired by the purity of the Native Americans, and receive a deeper understanding of who they are and the compassion that they hold.
The clothing itself, shown on the people of MHA Nation, is diverse and colourful. Keeping in theme with the celebration of equality and co-existence, it features world flags and translations of the phrase “Human Race” on various dynamic items. The greater exploration of historical cultures and communities gives the collection more meaning and depth, as we learn of others stories, separating it from the typical sportswear we face today.
With each video we expect to see more from various communities around the world, as Pharrell explores different cultures and share their stories, traditions and lessons with us. Pharrell aims to empower people no matter where they are from and looks to create a more understanding and accepting view of different cultures in our, almost, parallel world.
