‘Volt Introduces’ eight young artists who were commissioned to illustrate love as fashion and art.
What makes their hearts beat faster?
Simona Skarickaite is Lithuanian artist, currently is based in Oxford. Loves her study BA Fashion Illustration at the London College of Fashion. Simona is fascinated by the fact that from one small thought or emotion she can grow, transform and develop a concept, visually into piece that tells a story or message. Volt wants to know what else she finds fascinating.
Volt Café: Where does your passion for illustrations come from?
Simona Skarickaite: Mostly it comes from the fashion world and visual research and a possibility of creating a luxury, high end product.
VC: What or who is your biggest crush?
SS: I think my biggest crush at the moment is New York designer Thom Browne, his collections has this artistic flavour, which inspires me a lot, especially his S/S14 collection.
VC: How would you describe your illustrative style?
SS: It is combined by a variety of techniques; it depends on the materials I use. Also I tend to experiment with line, depth, colour, photographic image, or manipulate the image digitally. The style itself is changing constantly from abstract to realistic.
VC: What chances do you see in being an illustrator?
SS: The fashion industry keeps me motivated to be a better artist, because it is constantly changing. There are so many ways to present fashion, and illustration is one of them. I keep my options open.
VC: What is your background?
SS: Back home in Lithuania, I studied at art school where I learnt that art was what I wanted to study. In Oxford I took an access course to Art and Design. And now I am studying Fashion Illustration at London College of Fashion. Besides fashion illustration my passion is to paint and take photographs.
VC: What is your biggest goal so far?
SS: I would like to have my own studio in near future, for me and other artists.
VC: We asked you to illustrate ‘Love’. In words, what does love mean to you?
SS: Few days ago I read an article where children were asked to describe what ‘Love’ means to them. And one girl said that love is when my mom tastes coffee before she gives it to my father; to make sure it is sweet enough. So love for me is when you do small nice thing to each other and ask nothing in return. Love is a happy, smiling face.
VC: What are your dreams?
SS: I am dreaming about travelling; to see unseen places, meet people and catch the moments while they last.
VC: What is the most romantic thing that happened to you?
SS: The most romantic thing that has happened to me was to watch falling stars while on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea.
VC: What can you see on the streets of London?
SS: You can see everything on London streets. London has so much flavour and it’s just buzzing from creativity every single day. Also Londoners have great taste when it comes to fashion.
