All hats by Gabriela Ligenza

Recently Grayson Perry mused over the fact that one day we’ll see the first attempts at 3D printing in a fond, nostalgic light. ‘Notice the wavering lines on this piece!’ ‘Yes, and there’s a tiny tab on the side – a genuine first attempt!’ Milliner Gabriela Ligenza has moved far, far beyond that realm with her striking A/W14 collection of 3D printed hats made in collaboration with Francesco de Comite from the Lille University of Sciences and Technology, a leading scholar in mathematical art, Joaquin Baldwin, an animator and storyteller specializing in digital creativity, and Adam Mellotte at Inner Leaf, a specialist 3D modeler for the fashion and TV industries. Ligenza is of course known for her staunch belief in working with (and thus supporting) the most talented artisans and is a real believer in ‘slow’ fashion. One of the designs is a wedding hat as far removed from the traditional confines of that medium as you can imagine. Ligenza’s 3D wedding hat incorporates A.S.J. Tessimond’s beautiful poem ‘Day Dream’, its yearning and hope filled words a perfect summarization of Ligenza’s pleasure-loving life philosophy.

More than anything, Ligenza demonstrates how with clever balance, old and new crafts and techniques can exist in harmony and that technology, when applied with delicacy and coherence, needn’t conflict with centuries old art forms.

Gabriela Ligenza has been at the forefront of modern British Millinery and Accessories design for over 25 years with a career combining clients as diverse as Princess Diana and Princess Caroline of Monaco, Hollywood stars, and supermodels; prestigious retailers including Harrods, Saks and Bergdorf Goodman; and international fashion houses such as Galliano, Bottega Veneta, Ferragamo, Prada and Stella McCartney. Her architect and interior designer background is obvious in her work; she decided to become Milliner upon arriving in London over 25 years ago. Her brand is founded on principles of classical techniques and artisan materials combined with a pioneering approach to textile development and innovation. Each piece is designed from her studio below the Gabriela Ligenza boutique at 5 Ellis Street off Chelsea’s Sloane Square and produced by hand in her Florence atelier housed in a 15th Century Medici Tower.

I’ll include the poem, as it is so beautiful.

One day people will touch and talk perhaps easily,
And loving be natural as breathing and warm sunlight,
And people will untie themselves, as string is unknotted,
Unfold and yawn and stretch and spread their fingers,
Unfurl, uncurl like seaweed and return to the sea,
And work will be simple and swift as a seagull flying,
And play will be casual and quiet as a seagull settling,
And the clock will stop, and no one will wonder or care or notice,
And people will smile without reason,
Even in winter, even in the rain
