Dawn Ng’s thought provoking installation ‘I fly like paper I get high like planes’ is composed of paper airplanes. The smallest plane is modelled after the size of her palm, the largest the length of her body. The project is based on Ng’s interest in the concept of home and the associated yet opposing feelings of nostalgia and the desire to leave. The thousands of paper airplanes emanate from a single window, bursting out in a series of streams. Ng’s intention is to visually and physically engulf the viewer to recreate the powerful feelings she has for home. As she puts it, ‘Throughout my life, I’ve found this seductive feeling of homesickness or its opposite, Fernweh or ‘far-sickness’, a desire to leave. Both tsunamis of longing so great that either can overwhelm and paralyze my entire being’.
