Test Presents are proud to announce Fashion in Film Festival Curator and Director Marketa Uhlirova as the seventh co-host in their series of public film screenings and talks. Each month, Test Presents invite a different guest presenter to select a film that has inspired them or their work. Uhlirova has chosen Czech New Wave comedy from 1966, Vera Chytilova’s ‘Daisies’, a visually surreal feature following the anarchic adventures of two female heroines. Uhlirova will also discuss the notion of colour in costume with two additional early Pathé shorts.
Chytilova’s radically avant-garde approach to filmmaking assaults the viewer in every respect. Chytilova destroys the conventions and the expectations of cinema much in the same way her protagonists destroy social and behavioral norms and expectations. In the very Dadaist ‘Daisies’, two teenage girls, who are both named Marie, decide that since the world is spoiled they will be spoiled as well; accordingly they embark on a series of destructive pranks in which they consume and destroy the world about them. This freewheeling, madcap feminist farce was immediately banned by the Czech government at the time.
Uhlirova follows in the footsteps of previous illustrious co-hosts such as Fashion Designer Roksanda Ilincic and the Editor of Gentlewoman, Penny Martin, by introducing the film and participating in a post-screening discussion. The film will screen on Thursday 19th January at 7.30pm at the Council Chamber Screening Room, Town Hall Hotel, Bethnal Green.
All guests attending will receive complimentary drinks courtesy of Peroni (yeay!) and tickets are available for a mere £5 to buy at http://www.etickets.to/buy/?e=7778
Three films, the chance to expand your mind AND an alcoholic drink for a mere £5? How tremendous! London’s amazing.
