Sadly Fashion Stylists’ efforts on the famous often go unrewarded – when their clients look great it’s automatically assumed it’s due to their own innate sense of style. Of course, if they look bad, people are quick to point the finger. The iconic Maripol is a classic case in point – few people realise what really put Madonna on the map. (Clue: not singing or dancing ability). We all remember the famous typewriter rubber bands, the crucifixes, those earrings! A regular at the same clubs that the Madgesaurus frequented, Maripol played a big part in her early look, creating a very recognisable and desirable silhouette, which a million copycats instantly embraced.

A lot of water under the bridge since… She opened her own boutique, Maripolitan, worked as an Art Director on music videos, designed jewelry for Marc Jacobs  and wrote a book, Maripolerama.

Last year she brought out another book, Little Red Riding Hood. This photo book chronicles Maripol’s nightlife adventures with famous friends (Madonna, Basquiat, Warhol to name but a few). Images from the book are also currently exhibited at CLIC in NYC which is certainly worth stopping by. Although the book is amazing, it is truly wondrous to immerse yourself in larger scale images at the exhibition.
