It may seem as if Fred Perry has been celebrating its 60th birthday for months now. But why not? 60 years IS a milestone, especially in the oh-so-fickle world of fashion. Fickle or not, the Fred Perry shirt has always been an iconic piece; one that some of the most influential figures in fashion, music and sport have happily worn.
Fred Perry compiled a list of 60 of its most loyal and distinguished fans with a view to request their participation in a charity fund raising exercise. Thus designers, musicians and sports people were sent a reproduction of the original 1952 Fred Perry shirt and asked to personalise the shirt with a birthday message or full-blown customisation. All these shirts are now displayed online before being auctioned for the Amy Winehouse Foundation later in the year.
Participating and very creative customizers from more than 15 countries include British cycling champion Sir Bradley Wiggins, Damon Albarn, Raf Simons, Neville Brody, Walter van Beirendonck, Inez & Vinoodh, BEAMS, Eko Nugroho, Jamie Reid, Exactitudes, The Specials, Peter Jensen, Christopher Raeburn and many others. The gallery is online at fredperry.com
