Fred Butler has been making waves in the fashion pool of late, and soon they are going to turn tidal – if not tsunami size. Creating a telephone headpiece for Lady Gaga’s latest video ‘Telephone’ featuring Beyonce, the video views on its release day snowballed to 500,000 in the first twelve hours alone. The headpiece was specially commissioned by Nicola Formichetti, Lady Gaga’s stylist and was handmade from … taking .. hours
Regardless of celebrity endorsement, Fred Butler has been appearing on the fashion radar for many reasons since she graduated from the University of Brighton with a degree in Fashion Design – initially starting off in set design and art direction, she quickly moved on to setting up her own website to supply specially made props and accessories for stylists such as Patti Wilson, Nicola Formichetti and Francesca Burns. As well as creating one off pieces with musicians such as Patrick Wolf, and tour costumes for Bishi and Sigur Ros, her work has been used in shots featuring La Roux, The Gossip, Little Boots, Marina and the Diamonds and Skunk Anansie. Her first official fashion collection was launched in AW08, and it’s success ultimately led to her receiving New Gen sponsorship for AW09 – a collection that she presented as a film at the London Fashion Week exhibition which went on to be included in the Birds Eye View film festival at the ICA.
Fred’s latest collection for SS10: ‘Hibiscus Ridiculous’ concentrates her unique techniques into a new body of work, super high voltage colours and patterns in her signature 3D style made in futuristic plastics which change under light with chameleonesque vigour. An eight pronged star features throughout the collection in a myriad of colours and fabrics, as well as textiles featuring prints designed by Brie Harrison. The collection will be sold through Fred’s first UK stockist KABIRI and each of the three London stores will feature window displays made by the designer.
When she isn’t creating incredible forms for our eyes to feast on she writes a blog on all things exciting on the fashion, music and arts front, as well as contributing further content to SHOWstudio.com, hintmag.com and itsnicethat.com. One can only wonder when she has time to sleep…
