Deservedly referenced as THE founding fashion blogger, Diane Pernet, the veiled femme fatale behind A Shaded View on Fashion, finally has a perfume with her name all over it. After years of wearing Avignon and Hinoki by Comme des Garçons (the woman has taste), a serendipitous encounter led to her collaborating with Celso Fadelli, the renowned ‘nose’ and CEO of the perfume company Intertrade. Together they developed four fragrances, all with beguiling and mysterious names. After all, who wouldn’t want to smell of  scents such as To Be Honest, Wanted, Shaded or In Pursuit of Magic?

To Be Honest is kind of a more spiritual side, and In Pursuit of Magic is kind of hypnotic,” said Pernet of the scents, which launched last year at Joyce Gallery in Paris. “Shaded is kind of a memory of salt on your skin, which is swept away, and Wanted is very sensual, with a bit of a leather note.”

To Pernet perfume is the first and the last ingredient of your outfit. Appropriately, Pernet now only wears fragrances of her own design, but she changes them according to her moods. “You have different parts of your personality,” she explains, “I’m enjoying wearing different ones everyday. If your outfit is like a painting, then perfume is like its brush strokes.”

The epitome of a fashion insider and also a film maker and global style icon, Diane Pernet is easily recognised by her trademark look. She dresses in sheaths of black and is shrouded by a headpiece reminiscent of a mantilla topped off with signature sunglasses. This unique approach to the eternal dilemma of what to wear has carried over into the famously ‘shaded view’ that Pernet pursues in both her personal life and in her career. Each of the four one-of-a-kind scents in the collection encapsulates an intimate aspect of Diane Pernet’s persona through vivid vignettes and narratives. The sleek design of the bottle is finished off by one of her iconic symbols: a spider, exclusively created for her by designer Mario Salvucci. When asked why the spider, she responded that to her perfumes cast a spell on people and help you lure them into your web (!)

Usually any press release description of scents is on the dull side but I had to include these as they each read like a tiny fairy tale, so visual and enchanting. Much like Diane Pernet herself.
The Diane Pernet Paris collection of scents launch this February at Liberty and retail at £115 for 30ml perfume.

TO BE HONEST captures the experience of stumbling upon an ancient church while walking through the woods. The green and woody fragrance follows you inside. Candles burn silently, their lights still flickering. A waft of incense lingers high above the altar as if the congregation has just vanished. There are notes of myrrh, black pepper, cedar wood, patchouli, vetiver and amber.

WANTED is reminiscent of an oriental garden as the mist rolls in. Slightly dishevelled and overgrown, moss clings to stone statues obscured by twisting trees and shrubs. Bursts of exotic scents are elevated by a delicate cloud of steam. There are notes of clove, juniper, nutmeg, leather with a little musk accord in the air.

IN PURSUIT OF MAGIC makes you feel as if you’ve entered a familiar yet parallel world. Standing atop a hillside temple, time is lost in a moment of sensory overload. The refreshing citrus air simultaneously invigorates and purifies you. Tart, clean, intense, restored and protected.

SHADED evokes a nocturnal bath in the sea. The salt on your skin, a subtle incense and new-found sensations await a secret lover’s encounter. Lightly caressed in the ocean mist, every feeling is shaded by an intense plume of vetiver and surrounded by the deepest touch of musk and guaiac wood.
