To be honest, my love of both Missoni and Converse is so deep that I’d happily just look at the pictures here of the two combined into a glorious fashion bon-bon and drool. However, there are some interesting facts around this latest marriage in heaven that I would like to share.
Converse have launched the Converse x Missoni archive project, which combines two iconic Converse shoes – the Converse Pro Leather and the Auckland Racer – with unique deadstock fabric by heritage stripe maestros Missoni. Part of Converse First String, a limited-edition collection that celebrates craftsmanship, authenticity and collaboration at the highest level, the project features a series of 20 one-of-a-kind sneakers created using fabrics from the Missoni archive. This exclusive 20 pair collection launches on Friday, September 28 at Colette in Paris with a special installation created by UK artist Gary Card to coincide with Paris Fashion Week.
Both the Converse Pro Leather and Auckland Racer shoes are of course legendary, not just in basketball and running respectively but also as a ‘mass-stige’ shoe that hasn’t lost any of its prestige despite being widely available. At any given fashion shoot, design offices or artists’ studios you’d be forgiven for thinking that Converse were some sort of obligatory wear as most of the people present will be wearing them.
Converse has collaborated with Missoni before and this is its sixth season. Both iconic sneakers make the perfect blank canvas to beautifully showcase a myriad of distinct Missoni fabrics that were first shown in runway collections from 1994 to the present day. Sadly no longer available, the deadstock materials are as colourful, vibrant and eclectic as you’d expect from Missoni, and completely reinvigorated with this collection that features incredible juxtaposing colours and textures. Detailing like the signature Converse stars made from Missoni fabric just kills me, it’s so beautiful.
Launching with a bespoke installation created by London-based artist Gary Card, the exclusive footwear collection will only be available at Colette, whose exciting retail space is the perfect setting for this sort of event. Card, a set designer and illustrator, took his inspiration from the Star Chevron logo that adorns each shoe, creating a towering sculpture that starts with a star at its base, before unraveling like a yarn of fabric creating angular chevron shapes that protrude in various directions as it climbs to the ceiling. The piece is finished in a stunning monochrome Missoni knit fabric, randomly covering its surfaces with the Italian brand’s iconic zigzag pattern.
Accompanying the project is a hand-numbered hardback book produced in limited quantities, each one bound in the same terracotta canvas that lines every pair in the collection. Swoon!
The Converse Missoni Archive Project Auckland Racer and Pro Leather Mid footwear will be released on 28th September 2012 exclusively at Colette, 213 rue Saint Honoré, Paris.
