As economic doom lingers and a new year reluctantly trundles along, I feel there is no better time to release the shackles of pressure and to have a darn good celebration. Despite our current financial situation (or maybe because of it) creativity will always flourish and exciting things happen, thus making me proud to present to you six women who deserve celebrating. Partly because of their individual sparkling talent, partly because of their undeterred hard work and mainly because what they are doing right now is frankly, awesome…

Josephine Oniyama (bottom row, far left) is a twenty five year old musician who can be vocally compared to Tracy Chapman, she is soulful and at the same time folksy. Her Manchester roots combined with her musical obsessions for Fela Kuti and Bob Dylan brings a refreshing, unaffected, and charming originality to her sound. Her debut EP ‘In the Labyrinth’ is available now.

Brigitte Aphrodite Voutsa (bottom row, middle) is a twenty six year old comedian who combines comedy and music to create what can only be described as utterly eccentric masterpieces in the form of song and comic sketches, all self written and performed with wild confidence. It will be interesting to see what’s in store for Brigitte as her talent is in abundance and difficult to specify as there is literally no other like her.

Laura Dockrill (bottom row, far right) is a twenty two year old illustrator and poet who challenges perception by writing bizarre yet familiar tales, notes and even shopping lists that are just as enjoyable to read as watching her perform. A genius and outrageous cultural kleptomaniac, Laura continues to experiment and collect ideas from literally anything and everywhere. Whether it’s idolising Rolf Harris to an abandoned map found on South London bus, it all becomes grist to her fabulous mill. ‘Mistakes in Background’, published by Harper Collins, is available now.

Shingai Shoniwa (back row, far left) is the twenty four year old lead singer of band Noisettes. She has such a compelling presence that if there is anyone in the current music scene that can rise to what a diva once was, back in the day when it meant your music was full of power, heart and soul, it’s Shingai. At the same time Noisettes effortlessly blend this old skool vibe with the excitement of more recent reference points like the Strokes, not to mention pop that can be danced to all night long. It would be impossible to escape a live performance without becoming completely enchanted.

Gemma Slack (back row, middle) is a twenty three year old designer. She graduated from London Collage of Fashion only last year. Her designs are conceptual, sexy, and most importantly, beautifully made. High fashion muse and singer Róisín Murphy fell so in love with her SS09 collection that she picked up half of it to wear on her latest tour. As an individual, Gemma is a down to earth Sheffield girl and excruciatingly hard working, letting her collections speak for themselves.

VV Brown (back row, far right) is a twenty four year old singer/songwriter and musician. She naturally changes from the beautifully energised popstress (that everyone is talking about right now) when singing to the picture of calm serenity when she is not. Her enthusiasm is reflected in both her musical multi-skills and in her eclectic vintage-inspired sense of style. A fascinating journey via Northampton, shiny Los Angeles and Walthamstow to get to where she is today combined with an eagerness to keep creating diverse tunes promises that the journey will only get more interesting.
